Writing a speculative letter
If you’re interested in a particular area of work or a particular company then it’s worth sending a speculative letter. This kind of letter asks the employer to consider you for any vacancies they may have now or in the future.
You should:
- Explain why you’re writing. (Maybe you’ve read in the local paper that the company is planning to expand or move into your local area and you’d like to be considered for a particular type of job vacancy.)
- Briefly explain your current situation. (Eg, ‘I will be completing a BTEC National in ICT at The Sixth Form College in July 2009.’)
- Say why you’re interested to work for their company.
- Say that you’re enclosing a copy of your CV which gives more details about your qualifications, experience and skills.
- Tell them you’re enclosing a stamped addressed envelope for their reply.
- Finish by saying that you look forward to hearing from them.
- Sign your letter.
- Keep a copy for future reference.
- Remember to enclose your CV and a stamped addressed envelope.
Top tip: Make sure you spell the company name correctly and read through carefully for any other mistakes.
