NVQ

NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) are based around learning practical skills in the workplace. They’re mainly taken by people who’re at work and who study on a part time basis – for example, as part of an Apprenticeship. You can also take them if you’re studying at college and have a part-time job or access to a work placement.

Assessment is on the job, at school or college, or with a work-based learning provider.

Five levels are available:

  • NVQ Level 1 – equivalent to 3 to 4 GCSEs grade D–G
  • NVQ Level 2 – equivalent to 5 GCSEs grade A*–C
  • NVQ Level 3 – equivalent to 2 A Levels
  • NVQ Level 4 / 5 – equivalent to Degree level

NVQs demonstrate that you have both the knowledge and technical skills needed to do the job. They are recognised by employers, universities and HE colleges.
