Getting the most out of uni
What’s it all for? Having a good time? Making new friends? Becoming independent? Developing new skills? Building knowledge? The answer to all of these is… yes!
You should plan to have lots of fun, but it’s worth remembering that your time at uni is an investment in your future.
What else can I get out of it?
Unfortunately, gaining an HE qualification can’t guarantee you a career, high salary or job security. However, there are some things you can do to maximise what you gain from your time at university:
- Join at least one club or society. This will help give structure to your free time and give you the opportunity to meet people who share your interests and who you can relax with. Plus it’s something extra to put on your CV.
- Keep a lookout for opportunities on campus relevant to careers you’re interested in. (E.g. running the projector for the film club if you’re interested in media - or working on the student newsletter if you’re interested in journalism)
- Look for voluntary work in the local community that will help you gain practical experience relevant to your career. (E.g. you could become a guide / scout leader if you’re interested in social work, teaching or becoming a sports coach)
- Focus on developing the ‘soft skills’ that employers value. (E.g. communication skills, decision making, good organisation, team work, responsibility, commitment, independence and maturity.)
- Look for relevant work experience in your vacations. (E.g. approach legal firms for paid or unpaid vacation work if you’re hoping to become a solicitor)
- Don't get in with the wrong crowd. If you start to feel you're getting out of your depth with your new groups of friends (e.g. they’re drinking or getting into drugs more than you’re comfortable with or they’re not taking their studies as seriously as you want to) take subtle steps to break the bond. Get more involved with other friends or with your club / society to break the habit of hanging out with them.
Aim to get - a life - a good qualification - and a better future!
