To summarise your options:

  • You could employ a young person and offer them training. This could be on the job training/in-house training or a part-time NVQ course possibly at a local college. There is more information about NVQs in our Young People section.
  • You could employ a young person as an Apprentice. As employees Apprentices work alongside experienced staff to gain job specific skills. Off the job - usually on a day release basis - Apprentices receive training with a local provider such as a college.
  • You could act as a “Placement” employer for a young person who is preparing to enter the labour market through e2e (entry to employment).

The website www.apprenticeships.org.uk contains a section written specifically for employers to help them decide whether taking on an Apprenticeship could be right for you.

If you are considering employing a young person you should be aware that there are different rules about working hours for young people. You can read more about these in the Young People section of this website. There are more details on the Direct Gov website

If you employ someone, regardless of their age, you will be responsible for ensuring their health and safety is protected at work. This will probably involve providing some form of training for them. There is lots of information about this on the Direct Gov website. In addition yo can visit the Health & Safety Executive website, call their infoline on 0845 345 0055, or visit the Business Link website.
